Shifts in Presence

The works shown are part of an ongoing project in which I explore disappearance and shifts in presence. The starting point is my father’s severe illness and the experience of how certainties slowly dissolve and relationships begin to change. At its core lies the attempt to hold on to what is already slipping away and to attend to the gaps that emerge in the process. Loss and memory become inscribed in materials.
Earth, grass and seeds placed in everyday objects become carriers of time, care and transformation. Through gestures of tending and failing, I explore how grief, powerlessness and care become inscribed in everyday acts, such as the filling of a vessel, the attempt to make something grow, as well as the silent failure of germination. The practice moves between the desire to preserve and the endurance of the inevitability of loss and finitude.

[i] Die gezeigten Arbeiten sind Teil eines fortlaufenden Projekts, in dem ich mich mit dem Verschwinden und mit Veränderungen von Präsenz beschäftige. Ausgangspunkt ist die schwere Erkrankung meines Vaters und die Erfahrung, wie sich Gewissheiten langsam auflösen und Beziehungen sich verschieben. Im Zentrum steht der Versuch, festzuhalten, was sich längst entzieht, und die Leerstellen, die dabei entstehen. Verlust und Erinnerung schreiben sich dabei in Materialien ein.Erde, Gras und Samen in Alltagsobjekten werden zu Trägern von Zeit, Fürsorge und Veränderung. Durch prozesshafte Setzungen des Pflegens und Scheiterns untersuche ich, wie sich Trauer, Ohnmacht und Zuwendung in alltägliche Gesten einschreiben, etwa in das Befüllen eines Gefäßes, in den Versuch, etwas wachsen zu lassen, ebenso wie in das stille Nicht-Keimen. Die Praxis bewegt sich zwischen dem Wunsch nach Bewahrung und dem Aushalten der Unabwendbarkeit von Verlust und Endlichkeit.

Nancy Görlach is an interdisciplinary artist living and working in Berlin. Born and raised in the GDR, her artistic practice combines painting, performance, installation, and digital media. Her work is often rooted in autobiographical experiences, which she translates into broader questions of identity, memory, and social change.
The foundation of her artistic career lies in her training in painting and drawing with Simone Wecks, as well as in her studies in theatre directing at the Filmschauspielschule Berlin. Through this combination she developed her interdisciplinary approach between visual art, performance, and theatre.
She is a co-founder of the international performance platform Bubble Gum and the Berlin-based initiative OR, through which she curates exhibitions and events. Her work has been presented internationally in exhibitions and at festivals, including in Belgrade, Paris, London, and Ponte de Lima (Portugal).[ii]

[ii] Nancy Görlach lebt und arbeitet als interdisziplinäre Künstlerin in Berlin. Geboren und aufgewachsen in der DDR, verbindet sie in ihrer künstlerischen Praxis Malerei, Performance, Installation und digitale Medien. Ihre Arbeiten wurzeln häufig in autobiografischen Erfahrungen, die sie in universelle Fragestellungen zu Identität, Erinnerung und gesellschaftlichem Wandel übersetzt.
Grundlage ihres künstlerischen Werdegangs sind eine Ausbildung in Malerei und Zeichnung bei Simone Wecks sowie ein Studium der Theaterregie an der Filmschauspielschule Berlin. So entwickelte sie ihren interdisziplinären Ansatz zwischen bildender Kunst, Performance und Theater.
Sie ist Mitbegründerin der internationalen Performanceplattform Bubble Gum sowie der Berliner Initiative OR, in deren Rahmen sie Ausstellungen und Veranstaltungen kuratiert. Ihre Arbeiten wurden international in Ausstellungen und auf Festivals gezeigt, unter anderem in Belgrad, Paris, London und Ponte de Lima (Portugal).
